Pacific Economic Cooperation Council Unveils New Headquarters in Singapore

The Pacific Economic Cooperation Council unveiled its new headquarters in Singapore today. The move comes on the 18th anniversary of the establishment of a permanent Secretariat for the transpacific partnership of business, government and the academe. The office was officially opened by Mr Peter Ho, Permanent Secretary at the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Dr Charles Morrison, the current chair of PECC who is the President of the East West Center based in Honolulu.

Mr Ho said ¡°For a region as large and diverse as the Asia-Pacific, and in a field as complex as regional economic integration, a thorough understanding of what exactly is happening in the regional economy - without the background interference or "noise" - is essential. The PECC¡¯s comprehensive and multi-pronged programme of work has been instrumental in working towards such an understanding. ¡°

The new headquarters for the PECC are located in the heart of the sprawling National University of Singapore next to the APEC Secretariat, the Asia-Europe Foundation and the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. ¡°With this concentration of organizations located in the same proximity, I hope we can expect greater coordination and cooperation between the various bodies involved with promoting international understanding and economic integration¡± said Mr Eduardo Pedrosa, Secretary General of the PECC.

The PECC will occupy a floor at the 29 Heng Mui Keng Terrace building the original home to the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and adjacent to the International Conference Center.

The PECC was founded in 1980 at the initiative of Mr Masayoshi Ohira and Mr Malcolm Fraser, then Prime Ministers of Japan and Australia. PECC is a pre-cursor to APEC and continues to provide policy input and recommendations to the governmental process in its capacity as an official observer.
